Drawing Conclusions (Day 1)
In retrospect, the first day of our outing to the senior home went very well. I think that most of the seniors felt very happy to have us performing and talking to them as it breaks from their quotidian routine. The Jazz Lion's performance was absolutely great, however, next time I would not mind if they had been a little more timely. Waiting for them was a little shaking, specially given that the weather was not cooperating. Also, I did think that the Jazz Lions would be the center of attention and it would be difficult to speak to the seniors because of the music, but it seemed as if some of the seniors enjoyed the music as only background noise. Danitza also interacted with the seniors by snapping her fingers during one of the solos which was very nice, it brought attention back the music and created a playful atmosphere. The only drawback at the moment was not not everyone could snap due to health reason, so maybe next time we will clap. The JROTC cadets did very well with communicating and chatting with the seniors. Since many of the seniors wanted to talk to someone it seemed that the ice breakers we created were unnecessary (and that is a good thing). The cadets remained extremely polite even at a little rudeness here and there, like Staphany who was misgendered by one of the seniors or receiving inappropriate comments. Though they did great, next time we should attempt to talk to more than one person at once since we were outnumbered causing some seniors to be left out. Finally, the interactive art session did not go as plan. The seniors were not very interested in drawing with us as some of them considered themselves “too old to learn to draw” or just did not see the “reason why.” This left us talking with the seniors and listening to their stories which was fun. Some of them requested some art pieces which Eleanor and I will begin to work on. Since the lesson did not go as planned, Eleanor and I have decided to not hold another interactive art session and instead also do Tea Talks with an art component - possibly an art therapy sort of scenario. I look forward next Wednesday and changing our plan up a bit. Mots nouveaux: en recul - in retrospect serait - would be devraient - should

Reflecting on Preparation From the process of preparation, I have learned the importance of communication between myself and my peers. While I worked on creating the program notes, I did to the best of my ability to keep in contact with the musicians, specially the person who drafted the notes, in order to confirm that I was doing the right thing. However, that person was unable to communicate effectively with the rest of those involved (the Jazz Lions) which to some confusion. The person admitted that they did not receive sufficient or any responses from the rest of the Jazz Lions to give me unanimous answers. The lack of adequate communication led to small errors in the program, such as misspellings (of players’ names and composers) and misidentification of instruments. Some of the errors were fixed in a timely manner but some made their way to the home. Communication between my partner, Eleanor, and I remained stable through the process. We decided to change our curriculum after speaking to some of our current art teachers and realizing that our plan may seem unrealistic, since we cannot introduce drawing or painting without hours of previous introduction to their basics. We settled of simply contour lines, and possibly blending, for the first day as they are easy to become acquainted with and simple to approach as teacher and student. I am still open to requests if they should come and am still very excited for the day to come. Journal 2:
Mots nouveaux: maintenir - to maintain pénurie de - lack of irréaliste - unrealistic Sketching an Idea
Eleanor and I went through a short but thorough process in order to create a plan for the Senior Home Community Service Project. We first brainstormed and listed possible ideas of what we could do with the senior citizens, keeping in mind ‘interaction’ as our main goal. Once we listed, we reevaluated our thoughts and ideas and considered more activities. From there, we ranked our top three and selected them as our activities for the Senior Home Community Service Project. Eleanor and I settled on an interactive art session where we will instruct the seniors on how to paint, sculpt, and draw. Though I felt that our process was effective and quick, I wish that we had more input from the rest of our peers since Eleanor and I are the only visual artists in the class, and given that we have been friends for a while now, I feel that our decisions will almost always be unanimous. Both our voices were heard, as, once again, there are only two of us. We will also be consulting with the other groups, JROTC and music, to create a program and small brochure for the performance. This part will take a lot of communication with the other members in the CP program. As of now, I feel very thrilled to be instructing an art session to senior citizens and also confident since I used to guide an Art Club after school in my middle school. I am happily looking forward to planning and executing the lessons and hope that it will teach me what it is like to be an instructor for the day, and feel the pain Ms. Soltanzadeh feels everyday (but only for an hour or so).
